Sahasra Deepika is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream of Dr. T.V. Ramakrishna. Born to poor farmers, he lost both parents in his youth. He managed to go to school with great difficulty and earned the admiration and encouragement of his teachers. He went to college in Bangalore, and received a degree in civil engineering. During the 1960s, Dr. Ramakrishna immigrated to the United States where he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati. He later settled in Charleston, West Virginia, where he worked for the West Virginia Department of Highways and eventually became Director of Research. After decades of service to the state of West Virginia, Dr. Ramakrishna and his wife, Vijaya, made the decision to return to Bangalore and dedicate their lives to children in need. They imagined Sahasra Deepika as a way to provide needy children encouragement, food, care, and a first-rate education in a nurturing environment.
The Board of Directors of Sahasra Deepika Foundation for Education (USA) and the Board of Trustees and Directors of Sahasra Deepika International for Education (India) work together to support Sahasra Deepika Institute in Bangalore.
